According to IBM’s annual X-Force Threat Intelligence Index, based on security incidents and threat data gathered over 2021, businesses are now being “imprisoned” by the active exploitation of vulnerabilities and the deployment of ransomware. The tech giant’s researchers say that phishing remains the most common attack vector for cyberattacks but there has also been a 33% increase in the use of vulnerabilities against unpatched systems. In total, vulnerability exploits are considered to be responsible for 44% of the reported, known ransomware attacks included in the report....

Today Google just released a new update for the built-in navigation app for Android phones and tablets, and it helps you avoid traffic jams. The motion GT Advanced filed earlier for a closed hearing was to seek court permission to close its sapphire manufacturing plant, reports Re/code. As we noted earlier, the reason for the company’s failure appears to be that it was unable to meet Apple’s requirements for sapphire displays for the iPhone 6, though it remains unclear whether this was a quality issue or an inability to supply the volumes needed. Sapphire crystal maker GT Advanced Technologies, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week, has asked the court’s permission to “wind down” operations at its manufacturing plant, less than a year after announcing a high-profile deal to supply the material to Apple....

Interesting new tool from Google: Android apps are in Java, while iOS is in Objective C, but this tool allows those who develop in Java an easier way to convert their apps to iOS. Interesting move. J2ObjC enables Java code to be part of an iOS application’s build, as no editing of the generated files is necessary. The goal is to write an application’s non-UI code (such as data access, or application logic) in Java, which can then be shared by Android apps, web apps (using GWT), and iOS....
Although Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel acted as a soft launch for Warner Bros’ cinematic superhero world, the DC Extended Universe didn’t kick off in earnest until the director’s followup last spring, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.
