Well-intentioned charities and academics have urged Facebook to halt encryption plans for its messaging apps, citing concerns about child exploitation. The call was made in a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg in response to the company’s intention to adopt end-to-end encryption to protect user privacy… The Financial Times reports. It’s not the first time this argument has been made. Indeed, ‘protecting children’ seems to be the new ‘fighting terrorism’ when it comes to arguing against strong encryption....

Grey’s Anatomy has had massive character turnover throughout the years, but as popular doctors leave the show, either through dying horribly, or contracting brain cancer, or a slew of other reasons, and more surgeons must take their place. It is this constantly revolving door of characters that allows Grey’s to feel fresh, even after 16 seasons on air. Sometimes, the series knows exactly what to do with a character. Sometimes, it takes a while for the character to warm up....

James Gunn has an idea for a Guardians of the Galaxy spin-off centered on Drax and Mantis, and it reportedly isn’t completely off the table. Drax (Dave Bautista) was introduced to audiences back in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy and became something of a fan favorite thanks to his dry humor and tendency to take everything literally. Meanwhile, empath Mantis (Pom Klementieff) entered the picture in the 2017 sequel. While her relationship with Drax didn’t have a great start, they later forged a sweet bond after Drax decided Mantis reminded him of his late daughter....

Just prior to the official launch of the iPhone, T-Mobile issued a carrier update to enable LTE, improve battery performance and add Visual Voicemail support . The only problem is that some users were reporting slower speeds after the update. TmoNews reports that two well known cellular programmers, @joe012594 & @cooldayr2, have successfully modified the carrier update to “increase the amount of bandwidth allowing for better throughput of data and data connection....

Microsoft kicked off its Xbox E3 2018 presentation in spectacular fashion, showcasing Halo Infinite, the next game in the Halo franchise. A return to Halo is something that Xbox players have long been calling for, with the series acting as the mainstay of the Xbox brand for many. Although Microsoft had previously confirmed that further games in the Halo series were coming, the company and developer 343 Industries had remained coy about exactly when the game was going to arrive....

Google has updated Hangouts for iOS today with a handful of new features and what it says is an overall improved user experience. You’ll notice some UI tweaks throughout, like a new menu button in the contact list and a button for quickly starting new conversations. In addition, chat bubbles get a refreshed look, as does the UI for video chat (pictured above). Also new is the ability to attach and send multiple photos at the same time....

Microsoft and Halo developer 343 Industries have finally begun spilling a few beans on what awaits fans in the Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s PC release, as well as cross-play and Xbox Play Anywhere details for the collection. Despite being somewhat low-key in recent years, Halo looks to be coming back in a big way in 2019. Microsoft was keen to confirm that Master Chief would finally be returning to PC, before also announcing that the long-absent Halo: Reach will be joining the MCC lineup eventually too....

Google launched the first Developer Preview for Android P yesterday, and while you can find extensive coverage of all of its features at 9to5Google, there are several features included that might feel familiar to iOS users. The new release packs support for iPhone X-style notches, a redesigned notifications menu with iOS-like quick settings toggles, and more. Google has announced a $1 billion investment in Australia over the next five years, including establishing its first Australian research hub, increased cloud capacity, and partnerships with local organizations such as the CSIRO. The IT giant’s Digital Future Initiative, its greatest investment in Australia to date, is estimated to support over 6000 new direct employment and over 28,000 overall jobs in the country. By investing in providing businesses with a secure platform for business transformation, Google hopes to help set the stage for Australia’s digital economy, especially as the country aspires to be a digital leader by 2030....

Gotham was more often about enemies than it was friends. The series saw Bruce Wayne and Jim Gordon frequently make the difficult decisions to ally with those who would be villains. That didn’t mean there weren’t some genuine friendships in Gotham city. While the audience watched Bruce Wayne grow up to be Batman, they also watched him develop a friendship with future Catwoman Selina Kyle. Jim Gordon went from enemies to friends to enemies with so many of his allies over the course of the show that it could be hard to keep track....

Ron Howard and company held a wrap party for Young Han Solo over the weekend, even though the Star Wars anthology film has not officially wrapped shooting. Howard took over the reins as Young Han Solo director from the dismissed Phil Lord and Christopher Miller back in late June, and has now been cranking out footage - and sending out spoiler-free teasers from the set - for over three months....
