Halloween 2018  is going to hit theaters on October 19. It is directed by David Gordon Green, who almost directed this fall’s other anticipated horror flick, Suspiria. The latter, which will be directed by Luca Guadagnino, opens on November 2, and it could very well compete with Halloween for the top of the box office during the same week.

The first trailer for Halloween 2018 has just been released, and it’ss doing what it’s supposed to - build suspense and create as much hype as possible. The film, which has received support from John Carpenter, who directed the original film, is set 40 years after the original Halloween, a classic that still gives many viewers nightmares to this day. Jamie Lee Curtis will reprise the iconic role of Laurie Strode, while Nick Castle will reprise his famous role as the original Michael Myers, albeit only for a few scenes. Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, Will Patton, and Virginia Gardner will also be featured in the upcoming installment.

Suspiria is a remake of a 1977 horror film directed by Italian genre maestro Dario Argento, which starred Jessica Harper, Stefania Casini, and Flavio Bucci.  Luca Guadagnino is directing the highly-anticipated remake, with Dakota Johnson, Tilda Swinton, and Mia Goth as the major players. According to Bloody Disgusting, Natalie Portman  and Isabelle Fuhrman were once attached to star in Gordon Green’s version of  Suspiria. Guadagnino actually had Green write a script for an initial version that Green would also be slated to direct. However, that version ended up being way too costly and never got made. Still, Green went on to become a superstar director.

In what can be seen as a brilliant marketing move, the new Halloween is going to ignore all the sequels of the original, many of which were poorly received. Audiences have always had a mixed reaction to the reveal that Michael and Laurie were actually brother and sister, and with 1981’s Halloween II now ignored, that issue goes away. Even the new installment’s co-writer Danny McBride admits that the point where the two characters became siblings was the point where the Halloween series was no longer scary. After all, if Michael only targets his family, all one has to do to remain alive is to not befriend anyone he’s related to.

Though Halloween 2018 has more hype than just about any other horror film this year, it’s not a guaranteed hit. It’s one of several classic film remakes or reboots being released this year, and audiences could very well be burned out on that type of revival before the new Halloween has a chance to breathe in theaters. However, if the new film is unique and stands out from other films in the horror genre, it could become one of the top grossing films of 2018. Suspiria likely won’t have that opportunity, if only because that name isn’t as famous outside horror circles as Halloween. Still, both films could prove that revitalizing a classic horror property is a decision worth making.
