Zoe Saldana expresses interest in playing an evil version of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The adopted daughter of Thanos, Gamora was introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy as one of Thanos’ most dangerous warriors. Fortunately for the galaxy, in reality she was conspiring against her father.

Gamora became the heart of the Guardians, learning to relate to others and ultimately forming a relationship with Star-Lord. Her life was tragically cut short in Avengers: Infinity War, however, when Thanos sacrificed her on Vormir in order to acquire the Soul Stone. These are comic book movies, of course, so Gamora returned in Avengers: Endgame - after a fashion. As a result of time travel, the Gamora of 2014 was brought forward in time to 2023.

Speaking at a panel at ACE Comic Con (via CBR), Saldana said she’d quite like the opportunity to play Gamora as a villain in the upcoming MCU movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Saldana has a point. In the comics, Gamora is considered the deadliest woman in the galaxy, a feared assassin who is a villain almost as often as she is a hero. In fact, Gamora was responsible for last year’s “Infinity Wars” event, when she murdered Thanos and collected the Infinity Stones herself. The MCU has never really explored the dark side of Gamora, preferring instead to portray her as a badass love interest for Star-Lord.

“The technical answer is, it all depends on what Marvel and James Gunn desire to do with the Guardians and with Gamora’s fate. There’s a part of me that wants her to go back, find her way back to the Guardians, but there’s also a part of me that wants to explore a bad Gamora. I’ve never seen that and she’s, you know, she’s considered the most lethal assassin, the most lethal woman in the galaxy, so I would want to see what that wrath looks like also because it would just give me layers to sort of work on. But yeah, I want her to get back to the Guardians.”

Although Saldana claims not to know what’s coming, the truth is that she may well have a good idea. Back in May 2017, around the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, writer-director James Gunn said that Gamora would have a significant role in the threequel. Importantly, he also said that he’d had some equally significant conversations with Saldana, getting a sense of the future direction she’d like Gamora to explore. Those were all conducted before Gunn wrote the script, meaning Saldana’s desires were likely factored into it.

It’s certainly interesting to speculate how the Guardians of the Galaxy would react to an evil Gamora. The experience would be particularly difficult for Star-Lord, who was heartbroken at Gamora’s death. He was understandably shaken to encounter 2014 Gamora, and Avengers: Endgame’s closing scenes included a hint that he’s planning to search his missing girlfriend out. Meanwhile, it would also be exciting to see how Nebula reacted to a darker version of her sister. It’s possible Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could invert the plot of Guardians Vol. 2, with Nebula redeeming Gamora rather than the other way round.
