Every hero will join forces in Avengers: Infinity War, but even with dire consequences, the Guardians of the Galaxy will maintain their humor. James Gunn has infused the MCU version of the Guardians with humor since the first movie and it has been an integral piece to each character as well as their group dynamic. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the funnier MCU films, and the early reactions to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 are praising the humor (and more) once again. But, with their next appearance being outside of their franchise, there was always the possibility that a slight change could occur.
Whether that would be due to the preferences of the writers and directors of Infinity War or because of the stakes at hand, it would not have been out of the question if the group took on a less humorous direction in Marvel Studios’ biggest film. Thankfully, fans who had those concerns can now rest assured that will not be the case.
The cast and crew of Vol. 2 have recently started the promotional campaign for the sequel, but with the Guardians confirmed for Infinity War, their level of involvement has been atop the minds of many. Collider had the chance to speak with Zoe Saldana (Gamora) about their next appearance, and asked her about their role. Even with Thanos’ impending attack, she is a big fan of the Russo brothers and reassured fans the Guardians will continue to bring levity regardless of the circumstances.
This should be exactly what fans of these characters want to hear. It is great knowing their fun-loving and joke-heavy approach will stay with them in a much larger film, which Saldana admits was a daunting scope on their first day.
[The Russos are] fantastic. I’m a sucker for siblings that work together and make it work. I’m one of three sisters and we have our own production company. They do a fantastic job. They’re not shying away from the drama that an undertaking [that involves] bringing all the characters in the Marvel universe together is going to be for them. And they’re understanding the dramatic beats and they’re showcasing it, and obviously it’s gonna have a lot of action and everything, but also as Guardians being a part of it, we’re providing that levity and I think that it’s gonna make the movies more interesting.
How and why the Guardians get involved in Thanos’ scheme has not yet been revealed, but Vol. 2 could help make that more clear in a few weeks. Even though Thanos and his sought after Infinity Stones will not be featured, the possibility of some sort of post-credits tease is high. In fact, there is a very real possibility it will be the case with the sequel featuring a record five post-credits scenes. As they have already been filming, it is possible they could show their Infinity War introduction in one of these scenes, while the others are used for fun.
We’re kind of like in shock. It’s too big. In theory your mind going in you’re like, ‘This is too big. I hope I’m not overstimulated and overwhelmed by its immensity,’ because it’s very big. But to know what they’re doing and the direction that they’re taking, I felt super excited very early on. And I love that the fact that the Guardians were keeping our authentic voices, and that’s gonna be really what’s gonna make our introduction—our participation—special. I love what they’re doing with the rest of the Avengers and their characters and their storylines. It’s gonna be quite dramatic and amazing.
Marvel has plenty of time to tease their encounter with the Avengers over the course of the next year, so Vol. 2 could do little of anything to set up what’s next. As everyone waits to see how this will play out, their use of humor (or lack thereof) is no longer something to worry about.
