Green Lantern, a frequent member of the Justice League, has been noticeably absent from the DCEU thus far. While there have been rumors that a member of the Green Lantern Corps will show up in Justice League, it will likely not be until the Green Lantern Corps film that we see Hal Jordan or John Stewart in a significant role. That film is currently slated for a 2020 release date, but pre-production is starting to heat up.
Deadline is now reporting that Warner Bros. has tapped David Goyer (Man of Steel, Batman V Superman) and Justin Rhodes to write the script for Green Lantern Corps, with the former also producing. Geoof Johns and Jon Berg are set to be executive producing the film, which Deadline has described as “Lethal Weapon in space, and it’s based on a comic book origin story.” The film is set to feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
It should not be shocking that David Goyer has been tapped as one of the writers on the film. Goyer is no stranger to DC Comics, as he has served as a writer on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. He also developed NBC’s short-lived Constantine series, and is the creator of Syfy’s in-development Krypton series. Suffice to say, Green Lantern Corps should be safe in Goyer’s hands.
Deadline’s report states that the story was conceived by Goyer and Johns, and will focus on Stewart, a former African-American Marine sniper, and his relationship with Jordan after the former joins the corps. This will only be the latest DC film to feature the Hal Jordan incarnation of Green Lantern. 2011’s much maligned film, Green Lantern, starred Ryan Reynolds in the tile role, and was a critical and financial failure.
With Ryan Reynolds’ star on the rise following Deadpool, it would be interesting if Warner Bros. tried to bring him back as part of a soft-reboot. That is just speculation, and there is no indication that Warner Bros. will attempt to do so. News should pick up, though, as Warner Bros. will likely soon try and tap a director, now that the script is being developed.
