After three seasons and a multitude of question marks, the return of FOX’s Gotham means that one of Batman’s greatest foes, The Riddler, is finally getting his proper costume. After an extended hiatus of nearly three months, Gotham is back and bringing back a whole new rogue to the gallery.
When we departed the dark streets of Gotham last, it appeared that Edward Nygma had killed his partner in crime, Oswald Cobblepot aka. The Penguin, and was set to continue his villainous ways. With the show returning on April 24, actor Cory Michael Smith will reemerge in a glorious flurry of green.
Fans of the DC comic books will spot similarities between the iconic Riddler costume, which has been doing the rounds since the character’s introduction in 1948, and the costume worn by Smith’s Edward Nygma in the Gotham images featured below. Complete with an emerald green suit and bowler hat, all Smith is missing is Riddler’s signature cane.
Outside of the comic books, Riddler most notably appeared in 1995 under Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. Here, Jim Carrey took the villain back to the campy days of Frank Gorshin’s portrayal in the ’60s TV series, so it is refreshing to see Gotham adopting Nygma’s darker side once more. While Christopher Nolan never managed to bring the character into his Dark Knight trilogy, there were long-rumored plans that Leonardo DiCaprio would’ve been linked to the role; while Smith is the only live action portrayal of the villain since Carrey.
Appearing in Gotham season three, episode fifteen, titled “How The Riddler Got His Name”, Edward promises to butt heads with his old colleagues at the GCPD and cause trouble for Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie). Elsewhere, Lucius Fox and Harvey Bullock are also set to unravel the mystery surrounding Nygma’s new persona in the episode, which could lead to disastrous results - especially with the Court of Owls rearing their heads.
