Harley Quinn may finally be coming to Gotham if a new promotional tease is to be believed. The major hook of Gotham has always been a look at Bruce Wayne’s younger years and the evolution of the city that made him. Even more so, the show has often focused on the altered origins of many of the Dark Knight’s greatest rogues. While this unique take on some of DC’s most infamous villains has won the show plenty of fans, it’s also proven to be an equally divisive decision for others. Either way, it hasn’t stopped the series from introducing everyone from Mr. Freeze to Penguin to Ra’s al Ghul.
Now that the show is back from hiatus, things are beginning to move toward the end goal of the season. A version of the Gotham City Sirens may be on the way with Tabitha and Selina. Considering Ivy is also on the show, the only major member of the team that has yet to make an appearance is Harley Quinn. The popular sociopath has been teased in the past, most notably in the ever-evolving character of Barbara Kean. Once merely a love interest of Jim Gordon, she’s grown into a powerful villain in her own right. Now, a new photo further draws similarities between her and Joker’s lady friend.
CBR shared a promo photo for the upcoming episode ‘The Primal Riddle’ featuring Barbara. While it seems fairly innocuous at first, the color scheme of her outfit and the lighting in the shot are unmistakably the hues of the modern Harley Quinn. Check it out below:
While the costume doesn’t look like Harley’s, she has a variety of looks in the comics based off of two central colors. In her classic look, they were red and black. In recent years, however, the black has shifted to blue. This look was used in Suicide Squad, making it the more recognizable look for Harley. The producers of Gotham have teased the arrival of the show’s version of Harley Quinn by the season’s end, so it’s hard not to imagine this nod is intentional.
Then again, the producers have long-teased the arrival of a take on Joker, with a number of candidates popping up over the years. The closest is Jerome, but even he hasn’t been confirmed to be the Clown Prince of Crime in any concrete way. Likely, Barbara/Harley will continue to undergo a similar treatment, with the producers teasing out the connection while refusing to firmly establish it. Still, it’s exciting to think a version of one of DC’s most popular rogues may soon be joining Gotham.
Gotham returns next Monday with ‘These Delicate and Dark Obsessions’ at 8pm on FOX.
